Origins and development

The cemetery opened in October 1966 as part of the new town’s development. Its rectangular organisation reflects that planned growth. Individual monuments include a Pietà and a grave memorial of three granite steles with a bronze sculpture. The city presents these as examples of funerary art; they do not constitute a complete list of notable burials.

Origins: Opened in October 1966. The cemetery is in Cologne, Volkhoven/Weiler in Chorweiler district, at Thujaweg, 50765 Köln. Its area is approximately 11.12 hectares.

Design and present-day character

The cemetery was created for the new town and Chorweiler. Twelve rectangular sections organise its 11.12 hectares and 4,160 graves. Facilities include a funeral hall and a cooperative burial section.

Read this character description together with the development of Chorweiler Cemetery: it identifies what gives the grounds their present identity without turning the cemetery into a purely historical attraction. A visit can focus on spatial structure and named orientation points while leaving individual graves undisturbed.

Connect the account with the grounds

The cemetery map contains 6 named places for Chorweiler Cemetery. Among them are Pedestrian gate 1, Friedhof Chorweiler, Pedestrian gate 2. Use these names to relate the historical account to locations visible during a visit, without assuming that every historical feature has its own marker.
